The String of Pearls: A Romance is the title of a story first published as a penny part serial 1846-47. The main antagonist of the story is the infamous Sweeney Todd, "the Demon Barber of Fleet Street", who here makes his literary debut.
Todd is a barber who murders his customers and turns their remains into meat pies, sold at the pie shop of his partner in crime: Mrs. Lovett. Todd's barber shop is situated in Fleet Street, London, next to St. Dunstan's church, and is connected to Mrs. Lovett's pie shop in nearby Bell Yard by means of an underground passage. Todd dispatches his victims by pulling a lever while they are in his barber chair, which makes them fall backward down a revolving trapdoor, generally causing them to break their necks or skulls. Just in case they are alive, he goes to the basement and "polishes them off", meaning he slits their throats with his straight razor. Todd has a young assistant named Tobias Ragg.

Synopsis
The story is set in London in the year 1785. The plot concerns the strange disappearance of a sailor named Lieutenant Thornhill, last seen entering Sweeney Todd's establishment on Fleet Street. Thornhill was bearing a gift of a string of pearls to a girl named Johanna Oakley on behalf of her missing lover Mark Ingestrie, who is presumed lost at sea. One of Thornhill's seafaring friends, Colonel Jeffrey, is alerted to the disappearance of Thornhill by his faithful dog, Hector, and investigates his whereabouts. He is joined by Johanna, who wants to know what happened to her lover, Mark Ingestrie. Johanna's suspicions of Sweeney Todd's involvement lead her to the desperate and dangerous expedient of dressing up as a boy and entering Todd's employment, after his last assistant, Tobias Ragg, has been incarcerated in a madhouse. Eventually, the full grisly horror of Todd's activities are uncovered when the dismembered remains of hundreds of his victims are discovered in the crypt underneath St. Dunstan's church. Meanwhile. Mark Ingestrie, who has been imprisoned in the cellars beneath the pie shop and put to work as the cook, escapes via the lift used to bring the pies up from the cellar into the pie-shop. Here he makes the following startling announcement to the customers of that establishment:
"Ladies and gentlemen - I fear that what I am going to say will spoil your appetites; but the truth is beautiful at all times, and I have to state that Mrs. Lovett's pies are made of human flesh!".
Mrs. Lovett is then poisoned by Sweeney Todd who is, himself, apprehended and hanged. For her part, Johanna marries Mark and lives happily ever after.
Literary history
The String of Pearls: A Romance was published in eighteen weekly parts, in Edward Lloyd's The People's Periodical and Family Library, issues 7-24, 21 November 1846 to 20 March 1847. It was probably written by James Malcolm Rymer, though Thomas Peckett Prest has also been credited with it. Other attributions include Edward P. Hingston, George MacFarren and Albert Richard Smith. In later years there were many different literary, stage and eventually film adaptations which re-named, expanded and often drastically altered the original story.
A scholarly, annotated edition of The String of Pearls was published in volume form in 2007 by the Oxford University Press under the title of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, edited by Robert Mack.

A large number of different railway trucks and coaches have appeared over the years.
Introduction
No railway would be complete without coaches and trucks, and those appearing in the children's television series Thomas and Friends are no exception. Coaches carry passengers, and trucks carry freight. In many episodes, coaches and/or trucks are key to the episode's plot line.
The engines prefer coaches, which are smooth-running and well-behaved. The trucks, on the other hand, are nothing but trouble. In the words of Rev. W. Awdry:
...trucks are silly and noisy. They talk a lot and don't attend to what they are doing... ...And, I'm sorry to say, they play tricks on an engine who is not used to them.
rom the story Thomas and the Trucks (The Railway Series, book 2: Thomas the Tank Engine).
Coaches
Coaches are the rolling stock which are pulled by engines, to transport people/passengers from one station to another. These are in two colour schemes, Red and Green. These coaches are the most common used, and rarely is an episode seen without one (except for those on the Narrow Gauge or Thomas' Branchline)
These coaches are based on the Southern Railway Maunsell Restriction 1 coaches, but the TTTE coaches feature less underframe gear, such as battery boxes.
Annie & Clarabel
Main article: Annie and Clarabel
Annie and Clarabel are the two coaches who work with Thomas the Tank Engine on his branch line. Although they are old-fashioned, Thomas loves them very much and the three of them are quite inseparable. The coaches often offer advice to Thomas, and appear to be more experienced than he is. Although they are usually pulled by Thomas, other characters have pulled them too. Usually this upsets Thomas as he becomes very worried for the coaches' safety.
Annie and Clarabel have appeared in every season since Season 1. They were originally painted light orange, then orange and later maroon with a yellow stripe.
Henrietta
See also: Henrietta (Railway Series character)
Henrietta is Toby's faithful coach. She worked with Toby the Tram Engine on their old railway, and when that line closed Toby could not bear to leave her behind. The stationmaster had wanted to turn her into a henhouse, but The Fat Controller agreed that "that would never do." The two are absolutely inseparable, and whenever they are apart they worry about each other. She carries passengers and is used to bring quarrymen to and from work. She has even been used as Sir Topham Hatt's private coach.
Henrietta is based on a Wisbech and Upwell Tramway four-wheeled coach.
Old Slowcoach
Old Slowcoach is an elderly express coach who has seen better days. She was found in a scrapyard by Thomas and Percy, and was later refurbished from her black livery to be used as a workman's hut. She wears the "chocolate and cream" paintwork of the Great Western Railway, upon which she was based before coming to Sodor.
She was also a part of a special train for Mrs Kyndley's daughter's wedding, as the "Something Old" of "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue".
She appears to be based on the Great Western Railway's clerestory coach stock.
Season 5 is the only season (to date) to feature Old Slowcoach.
Other coaches
The coaches on the Island of Sodor have many different designs throughout the series. Within the episodes themselves, coaches are rarely referred to specifically (unless specifying the engine who is pulling them, eg. "Emily's coaches").
The other commonly used coaches include the coaches from the mail train (though technically these are vans, but passenger rated), and the Special Coaches, a dull crimson finish with red lining.
The only other coaches are Gordon's special coaches, presented to him in Series 10.
Trucks
Trucks (Usually referred to in American releases as Freight Cars) transport goods. There are various designs of trucks, which of course serve various purposes. Open-topped trucks carry most goods, however liquids are carried in tankers, and anything else which needs protection from the elements can be carried in trucks which have a...(and so on)

Body fluids in art

A relatively new trend in contemporary art is to use body fluids in art. Examples include:
The controversial Piss Christ (1987), by Andres Serrano, which is a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine;
Self (1991, recast 1996) by Marc Quinn, a frozen cast of the artist's head made entirely of his own blood;
Profound History of the Victoria Cross by Daniel C. Boyer, a multimedia drawing including the artist's blood
Piss Flowers, by Helen Chadwick (1991-92), are twelve white-enameled bronzes cast from cavities made by urinating in snow (though this might not be characterized as the use of bodily fluids in art, just their use in preparation);
performances by Lennie Lee involving feces, blood, vomit from 1990
many paintings by Chris Ofili, which make use of elephant dung (from 1992).
Gilbert and George's The Naked Shit Pictures (1995)
Hermann Nitsch and Das Orgien Mysterien Theatre use urine, feces, blood and more in their ritual performances.
Franko B from 1990 blood letting performances.
However, there have been rarer uses of blood (and perhaps feces) for quite some time. Pete Doherty has painted with blood.
Marcel Duchamp used semen decades ago.
Criticism and difficulties
Many people[who?] have criticized this development in art as being immoral and depraved. They argue that it is not worthy of being called "art" and has no aesthetic value. They argue it is designed to oppose traditional morals and values, and has links to sadomasochistic sexual activities which they deem perverse. They also find the combination of bodily fluids with religious symbols (such as in Piss Christ) to be blasphemous.
The sale of blood art via eBay is prohibited as eBay prohibits the sale of body parts, and classifies blood art as falling under this heading.
